Rise in rarely occurring birth defects has raised huge concerns amongst health officials in Eastern Cape region in South Africa, finds a latest report.
The findings have come after the group of health experts raised its voice over the issue saying the same needs to be addressed at an urgent basis.
While a total of 50 cases of birth defects have been seen since past two years, says the report, the strange part to be noticed was that most cases were coming from the Transkei region. The area is one of the most underdeveloped and destitute areas of the nation.
It has been told by experts that these birth defects become highly concerning when even after providing a proper treatment; a child sufferer tends to die.
Varied kinds of birth defects are suffered by children from different areas. These kinds may include no nose during birth or absence of eyes with a covering of skin. Also, another devastating defect can be an exposed brain or heart.
While cases are increasing, there is only one centre named Nelson Mandela Academic hospital in Mthatha that looks after most cases.
"Health authorities are doing all they can to save them, but they just don't survive", said Sizwe Kupelo, a spokesperson for the provincial health department.
