Lead Poisoning Threatens Condon Species

A lot of efforts have been made to make sure that lead poisoning does not affect wildlife species in California. However, it seems that things are not working up to the desired level.

Recently, a study was being conducted at the University of California, in which it was found that condor populations in the state has been affected a lot due to lead poisoning. “Currently, California condors are tagged and monitored, trapped twice a year for blood tests, and when necessary treated for lead poisoning in veterinary hospitals”, said lead author Myra Finkelstein.

The research, which has even found place in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was of the view that lead poisoning in condor’s population has reached at an alarming position. There is a need to search for the ways by which lead poisoning in birds can be reduced.

Myra was of the view that condor is considered to be one of the sensitive birds in California. They are so sensitive that they cannot stand even minute changes in their environment settings. Their population depleted to a great extent in 1982, but has improved a lot since that time. However, things are getting bitter yet again due to lead poisoning.
