India's Western Ghats Gets World Heritage Site

Soon, the list of World Heritage Sites can see an addition as the UN's cultural agency, Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), has given India’s Western Ghats a World Heritage status.

The agency has voted and suggested to add this wide mountain range of Western Ghats in the list, which is running along the western coast of India and is spread over approx 160,000 sq km (61,776 sq miles).

In the meeting of Sunday that was held in the Russian city of St Petersburg, Unesco officials said that the lush mountain range that is stretching from the country's southern tip to Gujarat in the north is presently facing a risk of biodiversity crisis.

The officials cleared the major role being played by the Western Ghats in the country India be it providing home to more than 325 globally-threatened flora, fauna, bird, amphibian, reptile and fish species, or its heavy influence on Indian monsoons.

Following the discussions in the meeting, the Indian Western Ghats have been added to the World Heritage Sites List by the United Nations. The chain of mountains and forests is also known as the world's one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity.

These are older than the Himalaya Mountain starting from the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra and spread throughout the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala making its end at Kanyakumari.
