An investigation conducted into metal-on-metal hip implants that raised fears amongst medical regulators of causing serious problems later has now called for a recall of all implants, as per a recent report.

A survey conducted by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 2010 had revealed that these implants can cause one to suffer extreme pain. Since, these tend to wear down at some or the other time, releasing harmful metal particles into the bloodstream and causing serious joint issues.

“The majority of people with metal on metal hip replacements are at low risk of developing any serious problems. We are continuing to closely monitor all evidence”, the MHRA affirmed on January 30 this year.

However, it has now been found that the risk is greater than though earlier. And, as per the findings, around 30,000 people in Britain are at risk because of having the same.

It is therefore that the group has asked all surgeons conducting such implants to stop these as well as return the unused ones to the manufacturer. Also, those who had received the DePuy ASR implants are being requested to undergo annual follow-up visits.

In addition, the medical regulators have recommended giving recipients contact information so they may get an immediate help while suffering pain or experiencing a failure.
