SA Turning Into the Hub of Tik Trade Chain

SA Turning Into the Hub of Tik Trade Chain

A recent report revealed the widening trap of one of the most destructive drugs on the market in South Africa, thereby sending alarming signals in the society. It has also been revealed in a UN Office on Drugs and Crime report that South Africa is among the key players selling tik.

It was also added that a 46-year-old woman has also been charged of smuggling the drug after border police at Cape Town International Airport nabbed her on Sunday. She was reported having some 10.5kg of tik, which was some R3-million worth.

"This drug is definitely on the increase. It is everywhere, especially in the Pretoria suburbs of Eersterus and Laudium, and in Johannesburg's Lenasia”, said a police source, while confirming that the drug is very much accessible and cheap too. Even 2008 UN Office on Drugs and Crime report has claimed that Tik was manufactured in South Africa in Gauteng in 2003 and it was later that it spiraled its net in the Western Cape.

The drug is a "powerfully addictive stimulant", as per the Medical Research Council of South Africa, is reported to affect many communities and the worst affected is the Western Cape. There is need to put a check on the spiraling rate of the drug which is slowly getting into the roots of South Africa.
