Corals Can Rebound with Changing Climatic Conditions, Suggests Study

In a recent study, it has been discovered that 2,500 years ago the coral reefs off the Panama Coast were distorted due to an intense change in the oceanic temperatures. And then once again with the amendment in those conditions becoming normal, these corals came back. Now it’s been more than a millennium that they are flourishing well.

This study has put light on some of the troublesome and hopeful information about coral ecosystems.

The bad news is that the strong and frequent El Niño and La Niña conditions, due to which decades ago these corals were forced to become vague, are expected to arise once again in the coming times. Therefore, there are chances that in the face of global warming, which is one of the most concerned issues these days, these corals might face threats once again.

But then the good news is that since corals seem to have the tendency of getting active once again after so many years of their collapse, therefore it is expected that if they crumble due to global warming in coming times, then they might bounce back further in the future when conditions improve.

As said by Richard Aronson, a coral reef ecologist and paleobiologist at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, “The real message here is that corals do have the resiliency to recover. It happened 1,500 years ago after 2,500 years of nothing, so it could happen again”.
