A group of researchers at the University of Arizona has now created a new pair of legs that have the ability to take baby steps, as revealed by a recent report.

"Interestingly, we were able to produce a walking gait, without balance, which mimicked human walking with only a simple half-centre controlling the hips”, says Ph. D. student Theresa Klein.

As per the team’s say, the robot has been built with a neural controller i. e. a half-centre. Also, it has been provided with leg sensors, which have the ability to calculate the weight of every step. The info is then sent back to the half centre that refers to the neural network existing in the human spinal cord.

While previous studies had also led to the development of many walking robots, it is being said that none had the nervous system feedback feature, nor did they have the biological reflexes.

It has been told that the robot legs effectively control the hips even with the simple nervous system, and reflex responses of the lower legs help in the same.

Also, the weight sensors can mimic leg muscles by joining with Kevlar straps of the robot. It is being hoped that the findings would explain the way human babies can walk without an adult’s support.
