The World Health Organization (WHO) has suspected HIV testing kits, being largely distributed in several countries, of harming people in terms of health, a recent report has found. And South Africa has thus stopped the distribution.
The ruling regarding blacklisting of kits was made in January, though the same has been publicized last week only. It is therefore that the decision to supply these kits no more has been taken on Monday by the Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, the report finds.
While health experts are unaware about the number of SD Bioline HIV testing kits out of 4.5 million distributed before the revelation, they have immediately taken a step to comply with the WHO’s decision.
The reason behind the same is that the Democratic Alliance has reported a total of nearly Democratic Alliance people with HIV virus to have realized a health risk after purchase of these kits. "The minister must be held accountable for placing South Africans at risk, even through his ignorance", says Patricia Kopane, DA health spokesperson.
As per the findings, the National Treasury has also been probing into the matter to find out what made the R22.5m tender for HIV testing kits to win an award. Also, it is conducting an investigation to find out if all provinces have suffered from these kits.
