11th July is World Population Day

In the last 50 years, the world population has increased by 2.5 times and as on July 9, 2012, there were 7,025,071,966 people living on the earth. Figures seem to be knocking out mind, but it was important to unveil, as 11th July is observed as the World Population Day.

Decision of observing 11th July as the World Population Day was taken in 1989 by the United Nations Development Programme. The Governing Council noticed that with the rise in population, many other things have been on rise, some of them being poverty, malnutrition, and different sort of diseases, injustice in the field of politics, social world and as well on the level of economy.

There was a need to address all the issues, which were increasing with the rise in population. So, finally it was decided that 11th July will be monitored as the World Population Day.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said that it is a matter of concern that when other things have been advancing, one factor remains uncovered. The factor is to give power to women, so they can decide about family planning.

Moon further affirmed, "Healthy women and young people with the opportunities and resources to make an independent decision as to how many children they would like to have”.
