It seems that it would take some more time for the scar of cholera to leave West Africa's Sahel region as there are reports indicating that cases are increasing with time. With over 60 people killed and another 2,800 reported ill, it has already alerted the authorities concerned to take corrective measures.
Taking a serious note of the same, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO) are ensuring that all necessary steps are being taken to manage the rising number of cholera cases in the southern fringe of the Sahara Desert running from Mauritania to Chad.
There have been reports which have indicated the severity level of how from mid-June, the number of affected cases have gone up and the worst affected part is of Niger bordering the Niger River. If reports are to be referred, there are as many as 400,000 severely malnourished children in Niger, who are likely to be falling under the category of life-saving treatment this year.
"Its impact is aggravated by massive displacement of people fleeing the conflict in northern Mali. More than 330,000 people, a fifth of them children, have fled their homes, with 150,000 internally displaced inside Mali and over
180,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries”, said UNICEF spokeswoman Marixie Mercado, who confirmed that the impact this time is more pronounced in the west.
