Researchers have got a green signal over the still existence of the earlier thought extinct Caribbean racer snakes from St Lucia.
Yes, the discoveries have been made by a group of international scientists, who while hunting for snake in the Maria Island reserve in St Lucia spotted at least 11 St Lucia racers.
Maria Islands reserve forms an important part of St Lucia and is located about one kilometre in the south of the main island. The findings have been confirmed by the British-based Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, in which Mr. Matthew Morton, Durrell's Eastern Caribbean program manager said that scientist’s estimations are claiming 18 living snakes on the reserve.
"In one sense it is a very worrying situation, with such a small population restricted to a single, tiny site", he said. "But in another sense, it's an opportunity ... It means that we still have a chance to save this species”.
Since 1936, scientists had not seen a bit of species and so were the non-venomous brown snakes declared extinct but in 1973, a bit hope rose as somebody spotted one in the list on the rocky reserve.
To find about these rare snakes, Mr. Durrell late last year started his search with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and other groups on the larger of the two Maria Islands.
