A Ground-Breaking Work by the Met Office

Global warming is one of the most concerned issues today that tends to ruin our future to great extents. It has been discovered by the Met Office that change in climate has already started impacting on the weather patterns across the world.

As said by Dr. Peter Stott, who is the Head of Climate Monitoring and Attribution at the Met Office Hadley Centre, in last 40 years, there has been noticed a major increase in the levels of humidity. Reason behind this is that due to global warming, more and more water is evaporating into the air. As a result, large number of clouds builds up and heavier rains come down.

A similar situation was there in the UK this summer. He said, “There has been a 4% increase in moisture over the oceans since the 1970s. Therefore there is potential for periods of heavy rain to be more extreme”.

Another fact that has been highlighted by Dr. Stott is about the low levels of sea ice recorded in the Arctic presently. According to MET, this could be another factor for upsetting the weather patterns in the UK.

Melting sea ice disturbs the position of the jet stream, due to which there occurs a band of low pressure; this further brings down heavy winds and rain.
