Chemicals in Rivers Affecting Sexual Behavior of Fishes

Have you ever wondered what impact house pollution has over the marine lives. The house chemicals and Bisphenol A (BPA) is injected into river without knowing the exact level of damage caused to the marine life.

A recent research has found that because of the injection of chemicals in the rivers, a change in sexual behavior of the marine can be witnessed. Fishes, in particular, mates after being guided by a hormone. The hormone is emitted by their body which helps them in knowing as to with whom they should mate.

However, the presence of household chemical and BPA in the river causes a hindrance to the body of fishes in emitting the hormone. A small study was carried out by the researchers of Minnesota University. They studied majorly Blacktail Shiner (Cyprinella venusta) and Red Shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) fishes.

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Jessica Ward, said, “Our research shows how the presence of these manmade chemicals leads to a greater likelihood of hybridization between species”. The researchers have warned that if the fishes are exposed to BPA then in the coming times they might even vanish.
