Global warming has started showing its terrible side. Researchers from the University of Delaware are confirming another big hit in Greenland Ice Island.

They are reporting that a massive ice island in the region, which is almost double the size of Manhattan, is no more joining with the Greenland’s massive Peterman Glacier. The break has separated floating ice shelf that used to connect the Greenland ice sheet with the ocean.

Above reports came on July 16 by University of Delaware Professor Mr. Andreas Muenchow via his Icy Seas blog. He wrote that the fracture in the ice shelf was reported by Ms. Trudy Wohleben of the Canadian Ice Service, which was subsequently confirmed by one of NASA’s Earth-watch satellites too.

The glacier in the year 2010 produced an iceberg almost twice its size thereby axing the size of the floating ice shelf by about 25 percent. This latest event has now put one end of the glacier in a new location about after 150 years.

“The Greenland ice sheet as a whole is shrinking, melting and reducing in size as the result of globally changing air and ocean temperatures and associated changes in circulation patterns in both the ocean and atmosphere,” Muenchow said.

He added that the air temperature now in northern Greenland and Ellesmere Island are warmer than the earlier records. A difference of almost. 10 degrees Celsius is being noticed every year since 1987.
