Researchers Suggest Expecting Mothers to Stop Swilling Marijuana

The University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute researchers have published a study in the journal Public Library of Science ONE recently, which gives evidence that marijuana consumption by women is indirectly linked to an expected baby's high risks of suffering fatal conditions in his later life.

It has been told by the team that women who imbibe marijuana during pregnancy period tend to have a premature baby. And premature birth of a child is a direct reason of his increased health risks in adulthood.

History of pre-eclampsia, family history of premature babies as well as diabetes type 1 or 2 or vaginal bleeds may be a cause of a baby's premature birth. It is being said that marijuana use is equally highly contributory factor to the same.

The study conducted had enrolled some 3,000 pregnant women, which has also led the team to disclose that gestational diabetes, mild hypertension and body mass index below 20 are responsible for preterm rupture of membranes.

But, pregnant women are being advised to avoid using marijuana on priority. "Our study has found that the risk factors for both forms of preterm birth vary greatly, with a wide variety of health conditions and histories impacting on preterm birth", said Gus Dekker, lead professor.
