Police force had put a man suffering from mental health to die in a police van with their dereliction of duty and wrong conduct with him, says a recent report.
Southwark Coroner’s Court has heard that despite knowing about his mental condition, the police officers handcuffed him, putting him in a position that eventually led him to die. Sean Rigg, 40, died one hour following his fatal position that causes risk of positional asphyxia.
It has been found that in August 2008, Rigg was brought to Brixton police station, wherein four constables put him in a small caged area. While making him lie in a prone situation with face down and legs bent to touch buttocks, they also harshly restrained him physically.
As per the findings, the position sometimes can prove fatal as it does not allow the person to breath properly. Also, the jury has been told that all those symptoms leading to severity of the illness were suffered by Mr. Rigg. Since, he had already been fighting acute mental breakdown and was made to face agitated for a prolonged period as well.
Though, the officers are being questioned about their credibility after the court watched CCTV footage. The hearing is to continue to reach a conclusion.
