US Army Corps of Engineers under Fire

The US Army Corps of Engineers has caught amidst a controversy as environmentalists have accused that the quality of water of Caloosahatchee River is disturbed and, therefore, more water is needed to be released from the river so that the quality of the water could be improved.

The environmental groups have said that the river is contaminated with algae. The algae blooms never leave the river water. It is believed that if some of the water is released from the river then problem of algae blooms can be addressed to.

It has come to light that about three environmental groups have sued the US Army Corps of Engineers with the hope of improving the quality of water of the river. While explaining the purpose of filing suit, Andrew McElwaine from Conservancy of Southwest Florida said, “What the suit would do is compel the Army Corps to meet a minimum flow level to the river and create a more natural flow regime in the river so it can begin to heal”.

The environmentalists are of the view that the suit would help in cleaning the river from the blooms of algae. The presence of algae in the river can cause havoc in the ecosystem, believe experts.
