New Drug Combo for TB

A study conducted by a team of researchers in South Africa has raised a new hope for the cure of the deadly tuberculosis (TB), which has till date reached almost every corner of the world, according to a recent report.

As per the findings, the researchers from the TB Alliance have developed a new drug combination that is being promised to treat TB in merely a two weeks course. The alliance is a Global Alliance for TB Drug Development.

The drug named PA-824MZ had been made to undergo a trial, which showed its complete success and effect on participants. It easily was able to kill the TB bacterium, which often proves to be drug-resistant to several medications, including isoniazid and rifampicin.

TB is a severe illness that often starts from coughing and continues with worsening the condition of the patient, sometimes leading to death. Dr. Mel Spigelam and his colleagues have told that PA 824 is a chemical entity that is made up of the pneumonia drug moxifloxacin and one of the older TB drugs named pyrazinamide.

Though, success has been noted, a more detailed study with higher number of patients is being thought to be conducted, as per the report.
