Adequate Vitamin D Vital for Elderly, says research

Vitamin D is necessary for health as it makes a person live longer. Recently, a research has taken place, which was of the view that more than anyone else, elderly needs adequate amount of vitamin D.

They said so, on the basis of their research, which revealed that people, who were above the age group of 60 years and have low levels of vitamin D, are at high risk of dying early. The study being led by Ellen Smit from the Oregon State University, further revealed that elderly are at risk of falling and this can cause major damage to their bones, if they are lacking in vitamin D.

"Our study suggests that there is an opportunity for intervention with those who are in the pre-frail group, but could live longer, more independent lives”, said Smit.

As per official records, 30% of New Zealanders are not getting adequate amount of vitamin D. However, one can surely improve their vitamin D levels by soaking sunrays, taking vitamin D rich diet, like salmon, tuna and eggs. Before taking vitamin D supplements, one should contact their doctors.

In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers assessed over 4,300 adults, who were aged above 60 years.
