Tiger Population Close to Target in Nepal

A significant increase in the number of tigers has been noted in Nepal over the past two years, as per a recent report, which has relieved many wildlife conservationists concerning the fall that was being realized since long.

It has been found that the drop from 350 tigers in 2000 to 121 in the year 2008 had worried the authorities and conservationists. Since, their continuous and innovative efforts to tackle the poaching threat have been failing.

The statistics now revealed on World Tiger Day has shown an increase by 21 tigers i. e. 176 tigers up from 155 two years ago. Of the same, the largest increase has been noted in western Nepal by the officials of the Bardiya National Park.

They have told that where in 2008, the number was 18, including male and female tigers, it has now reached some 37, with 22 female and 15 male tigers. Along with it, nearly 129 were seen in the Chitawan National Park and 10 tigers were found in the the Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, contributing to a total of 176.

Thus, Anil Manandhar, WWF’s Country Representative said, “If all the tiger habitats of Nepal can be protected like those in Bardiya we will be able to double the tiger population by 2020 as per the global target”.
