US Saves Trillions with Generic Drugs

The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has found in a recent review in the US that the large use of generic medicines by the nation has proved a great help for it. It has reduced the spending into health care even beyond several millions.

It has been found that the country has on one-hand saved more than $1 trillion in the last ten years. While on the other hand, last year alone has ended up with a saving of $193 billion with the majority of use of generic drugs.

The country had made use of these drugs up to 80% in the previous year from amongst a total of 4 billion prescriptions. However, only 20% of all medications were brand-name prescription drugs, which are multiple times costly than generic versions.

The research team has also told that nearly 57% of contribution to savings was made by medications for heart conditions and depression-like central nervous system disorders. Also, included amongst these were drugs for convulsions.

The findings, according to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), ask for more congressional support to the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “The use of safe, approved generic drugs is essential to decrease health care costs for our members and employers and keep our Health Benefits Program financially sustainable”, said Deputy Executive Officer Ann Boynton.
