World Breast Feeding Week: August 1st to August 8th

Every year, World Breast Feeding week is celebrated From August 1st to August 8th. It’s a time, when certain benefits of breast feeding are shared with hundreds and thousands of people to tell them more about it.

According to doctors and nutritionists, breast feeding is the best food for an infant and young child as it gives them every that syrup including vitamins, minerals and medicines along with oral rehydration salts (ORS) and drops that are required for a healthy body, state of mind and life.

During this one-long week, all those issues are discussed that promote child nutrition and development and critical contribution of breastfeeding in plummeting child mortality are restated. This year, was the 20th anniversary of World Breast Feeding Week.

In the 2008 Lancet Nutrition Series, it was clearly mentioned that children who are exclusively breastfed have very low chances, almost nil, of dying in their initial six months; whereas on the other hand, a non-breastfed child is 14 times more likely to die during this time. Reason behind this is that breast milk fulfills a baby’s daily nutritional requirements and prevents him from attaining certain diseases. Mother’s nutrition is essential and it should be considered as one of the best investments in favor of a child’s survival. Non-breast fed children, are at a higher risk of developing diarrhoea and pneumonia.
