A recent study has advised the authorities of California to come up with effective reforms of fish hatcheries so that the health of salmon and steelhead populations could be boosted. For the study, funding of $2 million was made available.
The funding was provided by the state and federal wildlife agencies. During the study, it has further come to light that about 40 million salmon being produced by the state agencies are not well managed. Besides, the field where the fishes are breaded is not monitored adequately.
A good management and monitoring of the salmon can help in improving the health of the fishes. Artificial breeding of the fishes was proposed to boost the population of the fishes. However, it has been found that the fishes are adversely affected with natural calamities.
It has been recommended that the salmons should be released in river water of San Francisco so that their health is well maintained. This year, the population of salmon is at peak as compared to the previous four years. Hatcheries have definitely helped in improving the population of salmons. But, more is required to be done to ensure the safety and health of the fishes.
