As per a recent report, it has been revealed that water quality has been deteriorating in the Great Barrier Reef, which has been causing harm to coral regeneration. The news for the same was being provided by the Marine Park Authority.
Russell Riechelt, chief executive of Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, was of the view, "The issues to beware with dredging are really the decline in water quality to remobilization of sediments that grow stuck to the bottom”.
Efforts have been made by the Queensland authorities to improve the water quality. A project has been launched named Gladstone Harbour Project. The project has been getting attention of one and all and is said to be quite crucial in the environmental battle.
Experts as well as fishermen are of the opinion that dredging in the area is the main reason of poor quality of water. The same is also blamed for deteriorating the quality of marine life. Things have worsened to such an extent, said Mr. Riechelt that it seems quite difficult that coral will re-grow in the water.
A greater action is needed except the environmental project. Mr. Riechelt affirms that the project has cost them a lot of money and they are hopeful that it will provide them benefit.
