Africa Witnesses Obesity

If to associate sub-Saharan Africa with something that one would surely think about famine and disease. For a change, a research being published in the Lancet has found that the region has been suffering from obesity.

All thanks to the effect of western world on the region. The region has been witnessing change in diets, as people have been moving away from their staple diet and have been adopting food, which is rich in fatty content. Not only this, it has also been noticed that people of the region have also become quite laid back and have stopped doing hard work.

Experts were of the view that it is quite hard to believe that people of Africa have been witnessing obesity. One of the main reasons for such amazement is that one million populations live under one dollar a day.

“Once people move to the city, their activity levels go down. They are no longer able to grow their own food. Instead they tend to rely on street hawkers”, said Jenny Cresswell, who is the chief author of the study. It seems that things have changed in the country and new measures need to be found out to reduce obesity.
