Squirrels Witnessing Climate Change Effects

Squirrels Witnessing Climate Change Effects

As per an ecologist, whose paper has been published in journal Nature, has revealed that climate change has started affecting squirrels living in Alberta’s southern foothills. Jeff Lane from the University of Alberta has concluded the above given statement as his research finding and has also raised concerns about other wild populations living in the region.

Lane said that it is a matter of concern that climate change has started affecting wild population. In order to reach at the above given conclusion, Lane and team started their research by assessing the southwest of Calgary. They chose the specific region as it is the place where a large population of Columbia squirrels lives.

Squirrels are one of the mammals, which hibernate during winters and that too for eight to nine months. With the passage of time, it was found that that squirrels were walking up from their sleep during hibernation period. Things worsened with the passage of time, said Lane.

While explaining the importance of hibernation period for squirrels, Lane was of the view, “They have to fill up their bank account with energy during the summer and then they will draw on that bank account when they are inactive for the winter”.
