Plate Tectonics on Mars

Plate Tectonics on Mars

Since years, it was thought that plate tectonics, a geological phenomenon, which helps huge crustal plates to move, was only found on Earth. It was said so that no other planet, but only Earth possesses the potential to have the movement.

However, it is now that it has been found that movement exists on Mars as well. The revelation was being done by a group of scientists from University of California, Los Angeles. “It gives us a glimpse of how the early Earth may have looked and may help us understand how plate tectonics began on Earth”, while explaining how the discovery would help them to know more about the geological phenomenon.

Lead researcher An Yin said that he got to know about the phenomenon at the time when he was investigating the images being sent through a NASA spacecraft, which is named as Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS).

He could not believe that the phenomenon existed even at Mars. He assessed more than 100 satellite images to believe that plate tectonics existed there as well. Yin has been studying the topic and said some of the patterns are similar to the patterns that existed on Earth.
