Depleting Groundwater Raises Concern

Exploitation of natural resources has led to severe depletion of many groundwater reservoirs across the countries in the globe. The revelation was done through a research, which was being carried out by a group of researchers from McGill University.

Lead researcher Tom Gleeson from Department of Civil Engineering of the University was of the view that during their research, they have found that a lot many groundwater reservoirs are diminishing at a faster pace.

In order to breach at the above given conclusion, the study researchers said that one of the main reasons for depleting groundwater level is that about 1.7 billion people across the globe lives near the places, which act as groundwater resources.

Some of the countries, which are exploiting the groundwater level, are India, United States, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Mexico. Among the above mentioned countries, India and China are two countries, which are getting affected by it, the most.

"Irrigation for agriculture is largely causing the problem but it is already impacting in some regions the ability to use groundwater for irrigation”, said Gleeson.

Solution to the same is needed, and it is said that the UN has warned countries, which are major culprits in depleting the groundwater.
