Robotic Earthworms to Help Soldiers

Robotic Earthworms to Help Soldiers

In the coming days, soldiers and military camps will use robotic earthworms to spy over their enemies. The robotic earthworm is under construction. It has been informed that for the construction of the earthworm, soft material will be used.

It has been reported that the earthworm thus created will have the potential to bear the strong blows or hits, which means that even if someone steps on the robotic earthworm will not crush to earth.

The project to create robotic earthworms has been called as Meshworm. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University together with Seoul National University of South Korea are working towards the project.

The details of the project have been published in the IEEE/ASE Transactions on Mechatronics journal. While writing in the journal, the engineers wrote, “[The] soft body, which is essentially compliant, exhibits large strains and enables the robot to traverse small openings and reconstitute shape, and survives from large impact force on falling”.

The use of earthworm robots was encouraged as it is believed that they will make less noise and would help soldiers in keeping an eye over the enemies. It is hoped that the robotic earthworms would be built soon.
