Beavers to Benefit Fish Stocks

Beavers to Benefit Fish Stocks

As per a study being taken out by a group of researchers from the University of Southampton, it has been revealed that beavers can not only have negative impact on fish stocks especially on salmon. During their study, they have noticed that European beavers can also have beneficial effect also.

The study, which was being funded by Scottish Natural Heritage, has surely reduced the burden on the authorities concerned, who were of the view that beavers would certainly harm the fish stock. It was also thought that the beavers would also create hurdles in the migratory phase of fish stocks.

Some of the negative effects of beavers on fish stock are creating problems in their movements, but the biggest advantage of beavers is that they would be enhancing the habitat level of the same. This will further enhance the habitat diversity, which will ultimately lead to increased production of fish and salmon, which was considered to be most at the risk.

Lead researcher Paul Kemp, who is in the department of freshwater fish ecology, was of the view, “The positive findings were more frequently based on quantitative evidence, while discussion of negative impacts was often speculative”. It is now that the attitude of people would surely change.
