While there are no dearth of efforts made to prevent and cure AIDS, it has been made clear by U. S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her 11-day 9-country tour of Africa, that still a lot needs to be done to make improvement in developing prevention programs along with making moves in curing and trimming down the infection rates.
During the tour, she also visited a testing center in Malawi along with a health clinic in Uganda and a pharmacy distributing anti-retroviral treatment in South Africa, thereby showing how serious and dedicated the United States in the drive against AIDS. During the visit, she shares her fears about rising infection rate in Uganda, unlike others where there has been a drop in the infection rate.
Though she applauded the progress made so far in South Africa, she added, "AIDS did represent an unprecedented national emergency, and we needed to scale up treatment and care to millions of people as fast as we could”. She made it clear that there is no space of laxity in this issue and the disease is still a global challenge for one and all to fight out collaboratively.
A commitment of extra $25 million in funding for HIV/AIDS work there has been made by Clinton so that there can be reduction in mother-to-child transmission of the disease.
