A lot of hard work has gone and then the improved Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) has been developed by SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The development is now able to provide laser beams, which are of high intensity.

It is not the first time when they have developed an X-ray laser, but they wanted a new one which is able to produce X-rays of narrow band. This is the reason that brainstormed and came up with this new improved technology, which has now become world’s most powerful X-ray laser.

Jerry Hastings, who is a SLAC scientist as well as co-author of the study, was of the view, “When our team from SLAC and Argonne National Laboratory built it, we were surprised by how simple, robust and cost-effective the engineering turned out to be”.

In order to develop the latest technology, they have taken the help of self-seeding. Hastings said that the method, self seeding, was up for discussion for last 15 years and that is when they decided to try the method to develop the technology.

The recently developed technology is able to produce the wavelengths, which are 10 times stronger than normal wavelengths, said Zhirong Huang, who co-authored the report.
