It has been unveiled in a new report that a crew of scientists at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) in Washington DC has now developed a technique that would be used to measure economic health, an ocean’s in particular.

The report has been recently published in the Journal Nature has been affirming that the index developed by the marine researchers for the first time focuses on oceans. Oceans are a major source that supports life on the planet.

Though, measures that detect the health of a person are already into the picture, including blood pressure, pulse rate or respiratory rate. It is being said that it was essential to develop a system for oceans as well since these give oxygen to almost half of all organisms. Also, many other things like food, many recreational opportunities along with livelihoods are provided by the oceans only.

The index, as per the findings, consists of varied attributes like benefits offered by it to humans as well as contributory factors to their health. It has also been tested that showed that oceans in developed countries were better than those in developing countries.

“The real value of the index will be the ability to track progress related to management policies over time”, said Karen McLeod, a researcher.
