A new scheme to realize reforms in the ongoing NHS compensation claims system has now been proposed in Scotland, which is to be consulted by one and all so as to look at its benefits and drawbacks, a recent report finds.
The plan dubbed no-fault NHS compensation scheme was initially brought in by the Health Secretary of the country. While previously, it was being carried out at an individual level, providing patients with compensation whenever they faced any damage due to a treatment.
Also, they were paid back in case of any kind of injury and suffering. It is now being urged by the No-Fault Compensation Review Group run by Professor Sheila McLean, who is a law and medical ethics expert, that the same process should be applicable in the NHS’s system also. It should be merged into one of no-fault compensation plans.
"It's in no-one's best interests to have that redress delayed because a compensation claim can take years to go through the courts”, Minister for Public Health Michael Matheson was quoted as saying in her support.
It is being said that the new plan would prove helpful in better understanding of practical implications as well as enable health boards to learn from different issues, thereby implementing changes to address those.
