Do you know that the human and Chimpanzees share similar genomic DNA sequences? However, when it comes to cancer only human are the one who are affected by it. This phenomenon has pushed the researchers to conduct a study to gauge as to why chimpanzees are not affected by cancer.

Some variation in the DNA modification has been found in chimpanzees while comparing it with that of humans. It has been found that methylation in chimpanzees helps them in preventing cancer.

The findings of the researchers have been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Researchers are hopeful that their findings would help in inventing cure of cancer. Yi Soojin Georgia Institute of Technology was reported saying, “Our results hint, but by no means provide proof, that epigenetic divergence - or changes of chemical properties of DNA - may be particularly important for some disease-related phenotypes that are pertinent to modern humans”.

Further studies would be conducted to gauge as to how chimpanzees are different from humans even after having 96% same DNA. Cancer is a lethal disease, it is hoped that the findings of researchers would help in improving the survival rates of cancer patients.
