Researchers Link PSA Test with Improved Prostate Cancer Survival Rates

Prostate cancer is spreading very fast and with similar fears, experts are advising for routine PSA prostate cancer screening with a hope that it will help improving the survival rate among men thereby controlling the spread further.

Though several controversies are surrounding the use of screening procedures, researchers believe what their new study has revealed.

According to the findings of the recently ran study, those men, who were diagnosed and received treatment for their prostate cancer at the time when PSA screening widely recommended by the professionals and several health authorities, have reported to be living longer as compared to the men, who were diagnosed or treated before the so-called PSA era.

Above study was performed under the guidance of Mr. Ian M. Thompson Jr., MD, director of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The team of researchers carefully analyzed the data of three different large studies that were run from mid-1980s completing through the PSA era that began in 1990.

They found that men, who were diagnosed and treated during the PSA era lived approx 49 more months as compared to the other group. “While not all of these welcome improvements can be attributed strictly to PSA testing, without a doubt it has played a role in extending many lives”, Dr. Thompson said in a news release.
