As many as 34 people have lost their lives during water accidents taking place in northern B. C., Vancouver Island and the southern Interior. The spike in drowning accidents has made the B. C. Coroners Service to request people to follow all the safety guidelines to avert drowning accident.
While releasing the data for the same, Coroner Barbara McLintock said that 34 people have lost their lives in drowning accidents that had taken place from July 1 to Aug. 24. However, the total number is found to be up by 22 deaths that took place in the same time in 2011.
Not every death could be tagged as an accident, as some of them incidents have taken place due to negligence of people, who did not follow water-safety guidelines, pointed McLintock.
McLintock was of the view that it has been noticed many a times that people do not wear life saving jackets and keep them aside in the boats. "Then something happens and they become separated from their boat or the boat tips over”, further affirmed McLintock.
In that scenario, lifesaving jackets are not helping them at all. Moreover, water levels have increased due to heavy rains that have occurred in May and June, which adds up the risk.
