School Supplies Carry Chemical Harmful to Health

Amid a large number of efforts to ensure safety of school-going children, one cannot even imagine that children are themselves carrying each day to school a substance that is really hazardous to their health.

A report revealed recently by the Center for Health, Environment & Justice has shed light over a fact that vinyl back-to-school products are containing high amounts of a chemical, highly toxic in nature. Ranging from lunch boxes to backpacks and raincoats to rain boots, almost each and everything as found in a recent analysis has small or high content of the chemical phthalates.

It has been told by Sen. Chuck Schumer and the group that the chemical has the clout to cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, asthma and diabetes. Also, the same sometimes become the reason of birth defects.

75% of school supplies, including in particular Dora, Disney and Spiderman characters, were found to have the chemical compound, which is already prohibited to be used in toys, with high levels than recommended.

However, there is no evidence till date from past five decades that the compound has harmed anyone. But, it is being recommended by the panel that the Safe Chemicals Act should be passed sooner as possible as the same clearly allows the Environmental Protection Agency to oppress chemicals to be used in consumer products.
