With the pursuit of providing iron rich bananas to people affected with draught and malnutrition, India and Australia have joined hands for the project. The banana thus produced would help in reducing the cases of anemia. While signing a deal with India, Australian High Commissioner said, “Australia is delighted to be associated with such an important project that would help prevent avoidable maternal mortality in India”.

Women often become victims of anemia. If they consume iron rich banana, then they can surely beat anemia. Iron is good for boosting the production of blood in body. Vitamin B6, potassium and fiber are some of the key elements of banana that makes it good and healthy. Iron rich banana will work as iron supplements for the people affected with iron deficiency.

Deficiency of iron can cause maternal death at the time of childbirth. The joint venture will prove effective in overcoming the maternal death rates in developing countries. An investment of A$2.6 million will be made towards the project.

The project will be supervised by James Dale, the Director of Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities University and Rakesh Tuli from National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute. Other experts will also take part in the project by providing necessary inputs and guidelines for the production of iron rich bananas.
