Anthrax Outbreak at Kruger National Park

Anthrax Outbreak at Kruger National Park

South Africa's Kruger National park is at danger of an anthrax outbreak, which has killed 30 roan antelope in the National Park but officials at the park are confirming that the outbreak has been contained and no more fears exist of its spread.

The above has also been confirmed by park spokesperson Mr. William Mabasa, who said in his statements of Wednesday that the situation in the park has seen no changes yet as the people are still working on the ground to contain the situation and stop it from spreading to any other areas.

Mr. Mabasa cleared that the vaccination will be given to only the roan antelopes in the park as the species is among the rarer ones and it is impossible to vaccinate all the animals in the park.

The incident came to the knowledge of the park officials at the weekend when they noted the carcasses in a Capricorn rare game area that has been created for breeding.

“We are burning the carcasses and also vaccinating the other animals”, confirmed Mr. Mabasa.

The Roan antelope is rare in Southern Africa; the park had only about 100 of the species in the entire Kruger Park prior to the anthrax outbreak.
