Climate Change Has a Big Contribution in the Spread of West Nile Disease

After a number of decades, this is for the first time that such a severe outbreak of West Nile Disease has been noticed in the U. S. and according to researchers it is the climate that could be held responsible for this virus the most.

In fact, after reviewing different aspects of environment and this virus, researchers from the University of Michigan concluded that due to drastic changes in climate, there are higher chances of flu spreading more vastly in the country.

According to a Michigan University statement, due to change in climate, the timely choreographed interaction between the birds and crabs get disturbed due to which the avian flu tends to boost up among ruddy turnstones and nearby ducks. When this infection rate increases among these particular species, it tends to augment the risk among other bird species also.

Delaware Bay is a junction for many bird species that travel across the continents and therefore there are high chances that increasing avian infection rate spread other subtypes of the influenza virus among other wild bird populations of North America.

However, the study not at all indicates towards an increased risk to human health.

As said by Rohani, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, complex systems and of epidemiology at the School of Public Health, “But every single pandemic influenza virus that has been studied has included gene segments from avian influenza viruses. So from that perspective, understanding avian influenza transmission in its natural reservoir is, in itself, very important”.
