For the first time in the past 50 years, German firm has apologized to the sufferers of drug, thalidomide, manufactured by them. Due to the drug, several children were born disabled. The drug was launched in the market during the early 1950s and 1960s to treat morning sickness experienced by pregnant women.
The mothers who took the drug, which was introduced in the markets of around 50 countries, approximately 10,000 children were reported to be born with defects, including disabilities.
As a result of which, the drug was recalled from the markets and banned to be sold in the year 1961.
In a statement, Grunenthal's Chief Executive Harald Stock asserted on Friday that they extremely sorry for the decision they took up during that time of not responding to the pleas of the sufferers. Further, Stock expressed sympathy and regrets towards all those who had to suffer because of the drug, even apologized to the mothers and even the other family members.
A special memorial was organized for the victims in Stolberg, where the company is based. Stock delivered a speech, during which, he said, “We ask that you regard our long silence as a sign of the shock that your fate has caused us”.
However, a victims' charity has affirmed that a serious action should be taken.
