Research Offers Hope To Those Who Can’t Smell From Birth

A recent report shed light on how mice dealing with congenital anosmia would be able to sense the smell. It has been reported many a times that those who are unable to sense smell from birth are most likely to fall victim of depression, and that’s what the research, done by a team at the University of Michigan Medical School, has kept in mind too. It was through gene therapy experimentation that mice were able to smell.

Though human trials are yet to be started, it has certainly raised hopes that in future, people with such disability might be able to smell just like any normal human being. "Using gene therapy---we were able to rescue and restore olfactory function, or sense of smell”, said senior author Jeffrey Martens, Ph. D., an Associate Professor of pharmacology at U-M.

It was found after 14 days of the treatment which ran for three days that mice were enjoying a lot of food, thereby gaining 60% more weight. It is believed that in future, the findings might be able to shed light on other diseases such as polycystic kidney disease, retinitis pigmentosa in the eye, and rare inherited disorders too. It would be worth seeing if the disorder would every find some cure in the time to come.
