Forecasting Seasonal Migration: BirdCast, A Mutual Project

On September 6th an Inside Cornell event took place at the Cornell ILR Conference Center in New York City, in which for the first time, few wider initiatives were decided to be taken for forecasting the seasonal migration of hundreds of millions of birds all around the world.

BirdCast is the name of this mutual project that will be carried out by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and six partner institutions. As explained by ornithologist Andrew Farnsworth, a Cornell research associate based in New York City, the main aim of BirdCast is to understand the concept of seasonal migration among birds, along with the effects of climate change over them.

Apart from this, the project will also help in predicting and justifying all those impending environmental hazards that are lethal for life in sky. Farnsworth further announced that BirdCast is an amalgamation of biology, computer science and conservation. He added "BirdCast will allow, for the first time, real-time predictions of bird migrations: when they migrate, where they migrate and how far they will be flying".

Other researchers affiliated with the project belong to Cornell and Oregon State University, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Microsoft and the Leon Levy Foundation.

With the operation of this project, there is one single hope of building such migration sculpts that will surely help in anticipating different species and in what ways they migrate at any given time.
