Latinos Are at Higher Risk of Suffering from Type 2 diabetes: Study

Diabetes is known as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It causes heart diseases and stroke to a large number of people. All this makes it vital to prevent the illness by hook or crook.

Recently, a US study was carried out at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles for comparing white, black and Latino patients in regard of diabetes. Their pre-diabetic and overweight symptoms were also evaluated. As a result, the researchers found that among all, Latinos are at a higher risk of suffering from diabetes. Reason behind this is that they store fat in the pancreas and are unable to give back the same by emitting additional insulin.

Therefore, they tend to suffer from diabetics the most.

As said by Lidia Szczepaniak of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and Biomedical Imaging Research Institute people with fatty pancreas are bound to emit enough insulin and therefore they are at an increased risk.

She further added, "In our study, we found Latinos were especially vulnerable, as they tended to store more fat in the pancreas and their compensatory insulin secretion was entirely suppressed".

According to the figures of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, presently around 26 million Americans are suffering from diabetes and in addition to them, an estimated 79 million Americans show pre-diabetic symptoms.
