Infant Swallows Toy; Successfully Operated

An infant has been reported to have undergone a surgery. The eight month old baby girl swallowed one of her toys, which later quadrupled its original size.

Aunraya from Humble, Texas, presumed her water-absorbent ball to be a piece of candy and gulped it. After she mistakenly consumed the ball, its size increased, thereby clogging her intestines.

Further, it has been detailed that the young girl vomited, her belly swelled and she suffered severe constipation. Acknowledging the condition, she was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Doctors performed her X-ray, results of which illustrated that the loops of the food pipe had expanded more than normal. However, the ball was not to be seen.

Surgeons performed an operation, after which they removed the gel ball, which was 3.5 cm, from the intestines of the girl. She was discharged from the hospital after four days.

Texas Children's Hospital pediatric surgeon Oluyinka Olutoye, said, “The ball could have perforated the girl's gut or caused peritonitis. We were fortunate enough that we operated early enough. The toys, named Water Balz, concerned doctors as their prevalence increased”.

Dr. Olutoye added that they tested the toys, which described that the toy was capable of growing up to 5.5cm. Dunecraft Inc., manufacturer of the toy, asserted that the toy is not meant for children below the age of four.
