Researchers present Oyster Genome Map

Researchers present Oyster Genome Map

Scientists have recently presented a detailed map of the Pacific oyster genome, which has been published in the journal Nature and clearly showcases the mystery behind an oyster’s fight for survival during the harsh environment of the estuary and sea shore.

In their details, the experts confirmed that oysters have several genes, which help them protect themselves and their body even during extremes of temperature and saltiness. The genome map has also revealed about how the oysters adapted marine life and how they form their complex shell for their protection.

Understanding the fact that Oyster farming is an important activity, which forms a multi-million dollar industry centered especially in China, Japan, Korea and the US, experts believe that the secrets revealed will help them breed faster-growing oysters and improve their survival rate. The above work was done by a team of international scientists from China, the US, and Europe.

Regarding the research, Mr. Peter Holland, Professor of zoology at the University of Oxford, and a co-author of the research, confirmed that almost 8 different genes are present in the body of the oysters, which altogether help them protect from stress.

The recent insight into the life of the creature is being hoped to give many more help to the researchers in future.
