For some time now, issues are going on in regard to the free availability of bus passes to the UK elderly, and there are chances that the provision might be stopped. However, when the matter was going on, a research on the topic was being carried out.

It was found that the provision of free pass availability for the UK elderly over 60 years is a great way to keep them health irrespective of their financial condition. The study, which has been published in the American Journal of Public Health, the study researchers assessed the travel habits of 16,900 people.

They continued to do so for more than four years. It was then concluded the scheme was perfect to keep elderly people in fit form. "Although the costs of the scheme are considerable, it may offer value for money as it seems to promote physical activity among older people, thereby helping to reduce inactivity”, said Sophie Coronini-Cronberg, who is the lead author of the study.

Sophie, who has been working at the Imperial College London, has urged the authorities concerned that they consider the health benefits that elderly derive from the scheme and then take any decision to scrap the policy or not.
