HEFA Wants to Know Public Opinion on Three-Parent IVF Treatment

It seems that Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) have got confused about its decision on three-parent IVF treatment. This might be the reason that the HEFA has asked people to let them know whether or not they should allow this treatment.

The HEFA was of the view that they cannot take decision alone, as the treatment not only involves ethics but advancement level of science. In order to treat mitochondrial problem, the new treatment will use the genetic material of three people.

In the procedure, the mother’s defective mitochondria will be replaced by healthy mitochondria, which will be given by the donor. It will further help in the development of a healthy embryo. The HEFA, which is authorized to take decision on the issue, wants to know the views of people.

They are also reviewing the scientific aspect on the same, but also want that people should tell them what they think on the issue. Professor Lisa Jardine, who is chairing the HEFA, was of the view, “We find ourselves in uncharted territory, balancing the desire to help families have healthy children with the possible impact on the children themselves and wider society”. It now has to be seen whether or not the problem gets solved.
