As per a research being published in the Journal of Fish Biology, a freshwater fish named as Gambusia quadruncus has been discussed. The male fish from Mexico has been found to be having genitalia, which has four hooks.

Lead researcher Brian Langerhans from the North Carolina State University said that the four hooks might be used to tackle the female fish, which resists during mating. It has been found that female fish finds mating to be a costly affair, and henceforth, remains reluctant to mate with low-class male fish.

On the other hand, mating is not a big deal for male fish and is capable to mate with a number of female fishes. Female fishes have some ways to tackle make when they try to mate with them. It seems that the presence of four hooks in the genitals of the fish is to answer the resistance of female fish.

Brian said that even he was quite stunned to see such kind of hooks. "So it may be thatG. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids”, he further asserted while expressing more reasons for the presence of such hooks.
